Choosing a paint color for the baby nursery is an important first step in successful interior design in the little one's new bedroom. Follow a few tips to get it right.

It happens during every pregnancy – for some women it hits early in the first or second trimester and for other mommies-to-be, it happens in the third trimester. It is nesting and part of that coveting and nesting is getting the baby’s room ready. After the room has been planned, it will be time to choose a baby nursery paint color. Although it may be a time of chaos, keep in mind that calming, non-trendy hues are best for a baby nursery. Babies can feel the calm in a room and aside from a beautifully designed room, baby will sleep more peacefully.

No Need to Settle for Old Fashioned Pink and Blue

Be daring in your interior decorating choices, and look past the traditional pink, blue or yellow. There are many new colors that are calming, peaceful and perfectly suited for a soothing baby nursery. A few other good choices for a calming color palette combinations include iced blue with accent splashes of chocolate brown; butter yellow punctuated by small doses of navy blue; the palest celadon green living in harmony with antique white – these are just a few of the color combinations that would work well in a baby room.

Paint Color is a Very Personal Choice

While pondering paint colors for the walls, trim and furniture pieces for the baby room, there are a few things to consider:

  1. Who is using the room? Is the room just for the new baby or will there be siblings sharing? If so, choose a color that works for all roommates.
  2. Is it important to choose colors that will transition well as the baby grows into a toddler? If so, stay away from cutesy wallpaper and over the top baby theme room design.
  3. Is eco friendly decorating important? If so, ask for special environmentally friendly and low odor paint, which are available at all the major do-it-yourself stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot.

Try before you Buy

The paint stores now sell large paint swatches (some as big as 12” square) and tester paint pots for a few dollars – buy them! You can create a storyboard just like an interior designer but it often happens that the paint doesn’t look the same on the planning board as it will in the nursery. Paint always looks different once it is applied. The light in a room, too little or a lot, will affect the final paint color. Once a color has been custom tinted, it cannot be returned for a refund if the color is all wrong for the room it really is cost effective and time saving to try before you buy.

It has been proven that calm color hues makes people more relaxed and this is no different with a baby. If a nursery is too busy, it is over stimulating for the child. When it is calm, cozy and serene, it becomes a haven for mommy and baby to bond and spend quality time together.

The world of decorating styles, trends and fashions are endless when trying to decide how to decorate a baby’s nursery and the first important step is, without question, picking the right paint color.
