At ten a child is at a stage between childhood and teenage years when he or she may seek more independence and yet may still be more willing to take advice than a teen. This is a perfect time to work together on a bedroom redesign which will teach the child the basics of planning a beautiful and functional living space.

Work on a Budget for the Room
Finance is always an important field of study from the time of the first allowance. When working on a project of this scale it is best to set a budget that the child has to adhere to. Ten-year-olds can have wild imaginations and expectations; this will root them in the realities of life.
The budget can be broken down into simple categories such as furniture, wallpaper, posters and such so that it is simpler to understand. The youngster can work to earn some extras.
Write Down the Essentials for the Room
A flight of fancy might leave certain basics out of the plan, so a list of essentials should be jotted down. This may include a place to keep books and good lighting above the desk. This will keep the child on track when shopping for material.
The bedroom should have:
- A comfortable bed
- A desk with storage space for books and stationary
- Storage for clothes
- Enough light and ventilation
- Moving space
Keep No Boundaries
Other than the budget and the list of essentials there is no need for restrictions. The child can decide whether the clothes should be in a wardrobe, in a chest or hanging on pegs on the wall. The color, artwork and the whole theme can be left to the ten-year-old to explore. He or she should be persuaded to visit as many shops and sales as possible to understand the various possibilities in design.
A parent can gently nudge a child off the wrong track; for example, if the furniture chosen is enormous as compared to the room, a parent can draw each piece on graph paper to illustrate how crowded the space will be.
Teach the Importance of DIY
From painting the walls and furniture to making the posters, a child should be encouraged to do things hands-on and learn from mistakes. This will build self confidence and also help with the budget.
