Designing a little boy's bedroom or baby's nursery with an outer space theme can be a blast.

Parents can take their creativity “to infinity and beyond” to decorate a space theme bedroom that’s out of this world on a budget that’s entirely down to earth. The first thing parents need to do is determine the aspect of outer space that most interests their child. Does their son dream of being an astronaut and enjoy mulling over maps of the galaxy? Or is their son a sci-fi fan who is constantly scribbling space ships, UFOs, aliens and planets beyond our solar system? Each of these themes can have similar backgrounds and motifs but be defined with different finishing accents.

Start with the Walls for the Outer Space Theme Bedroom or Nursery

Celestial theme wallpaper choices decorated with the moon and stars are a popular option for baby nurseries. Older boys will also find wallpaper options portraying realistic galaxies and rockets streaking across the night sky.

Parents might also opt for the more affordable coat of paint. If the room has large windows, the obvious choice of a dark blue background color can be lightened up with murals, curtains, lighter doors and trim.

To create a dome effect, parents may wish to continue up with the paint to cover the ceiling as well. To simulate the night sky, they can choose a blue from the same card just a few shades darker.

Once the walls are covered, parents can add a coordinating wallpaper border or decals representing the colorful planets of the solar system. If decorators have access to an overhead projector or box light, they can project a map of the galaxy onto the wall to paint a realistic mural of the universe. Parents can use special luminous glow-in-the-dark paint to add a mural of shooting stars, the moon, a rocket ship, or a UFO. Peel and stick celestial wall decals or wallpaper murals are an equally attractive option.

Posters are one of the most affordable ways to liven up the walls of a nursery or bedroom and for the outer space theme, the options are astronomical.

Crib Sets, Window Treatments, and Area Rugs, for the Outer Space Theme Nursery

There are a host of options when it comes to celestial theme crib sets bespangled with the moon and stars. Many crib sets are accompanied by everything parents will need for a nursery from the night sky area rug to the twinkling star mobile above the crib.

Older boys might opt for a generic space theme spread or choose bedsits depicting characters from popular movies or TV shows like Star Wars, Star Trek, Toy Story or Wall-E.

To make the theme even more affordable, do-it-yourself, decorators can sew coordinating curtains and throw pillows from fun space theme or metallic silver fabric instead of purchasing every item that goes with the prepackaged set. Sheer window treatments are another option that give the outer space bedroom an unobstructed view to the real night sky.

An outer space bedroom or nursery with a hardwood floor would hardly be complete without an area rug depicting the stars and planets of the Milky Way. These rugs are readily available with most space theme bed sets or can be found in classroom supply catalogues.

Decorating an Outer Space Theme Nursery or Bedroom

To give the room some added depth, parents can use sticky hooks to suspend a colorful mobile of the planets or inflatable planets arranged to form a colorful solar system. Glow in the dark moon and star stickers are another inexpensive touch that can liven up the ceiling or walls.

Older boys would love a telescope positioned in front of the window for nightly star gazing. The telescope can provide a fun and educational way to spend family time, and some excellent décor as well.

Chrome lamps or other accents will help to give the room a futuristic feel. Parents who want to go all out can purchase used furniture at a thrift store or garage sale and touch it up with a coat of metallic spray paint.

Shelves are a great place to decorate with model rockets, a globe, a toy telescope, astronaut figurines, and story books. Parents can choose books whose covers depict the night sky, a moon and stars, or rockets and set them covers facing outward. Decorating with books is an inexpensive way parents can accent the room and instill a love of reading early.

Parents and children can personalize the room by choosing several fun decorating projects to complete together. Styrofoam craft balls of various sizes can be painted to resemble the planets of the solar system and suspended with fishing line from the ceiling. Parents can pull out the paints and crayons for a fun draw-the-coolest-alien art session. Resulting masterpieces can be framed and put on display. Families can find a model rocket or two and construct them together to accent the room. Touches like these make an outer space theme room feel special and fill it with happy memories.

Decorators can use creative ideas to reach for the stars with their nursery plans while keeping their budget down to earth. For other tips and ideas, they can check out ocean, jungle, and airplane bedroom themes.
