A cramped bedroom can put a damper on one's mood, but this problem is easy to solve. Check out these creative ideas for making a bedroom feel more spacious.

Number one on everyone’s wish list is a spacious bedroom. This probably has more to do with the feeling associated with the bedroom than the function. After all, how much space does it take to sleep? Bedrooms though are more than just sleeping chambers. They are a retreat, a safe haven and a place to unwind at the end of a long hard day.

Here are a few designer tricks to make the bedroom seem bigger and feel more spacious.

Change the Color Scheme

Color has the ability to shrink a room making it feel cramped. To give the bedroom a light and airy appearance, try lightening up the color scheme. Making the color palette lighter visually pushes the walls back and reclaims some space that the previous wall color may have been soaking up.

One of the basic tenets of interior design is that cool colors retreat and warm colors advance, so cool blues and greens make the walls seem to move further back while red and orange tones may make the walls appear to close in. Warmer colors are great for creating a cozy feeling but if the aim is to create a spacious feeling, cooler colors are the better choice.

Light it up

Another fairly quick and easy fix is to add more lighting. Many homeowners think that adding light is a difficult project, but there are several ways to go. Getting additional lighting in the bedroom may be as simple as adding a couple bedside lamps or placing a standing lamp in the corner of the room. There are also expandable arm lamps that can be used at the bedside as well and they are a great option if there is a challenge for space because they attach to the wall. Of course, if additional pot lights and other ceiling fixtures are needed it may be best to call a professional.

Clear Away the Clutter

When every surface of the room is littered with items that should actually be put away the visual clutter can make the space feel a lot smaller than it really is. Simply swiping the surfaces of bedside tables and chest of drawers clean can instantly make the bedroom feel larger. Test this theory out on your own room by taking a box and tossing all the stray items into it until you have the time to sort them properly. Step back and watch how that one simple action makes a huge difference on how big the room feels.

Rearrange the Furniture

Sometimes trying a different layout can open up the bedroom and make what once felt closed in and cramped feel light and airy. Experiment with a few different arrangements to see if this could be the solution for your space problems.

Scale Down the Furniture

Bedroom furniture can take up a lot of valuable real estate. Smaller spaces need to make the most of every square foot, so decorators usually stay away from bulky pieces of furniture when slimmer versions can do the job just as well. Reevaluate the function of your bedroom furniture and assess if investing in a good closet organizer can eliminate a large piece of furniture. Then trim the fat and watch how the floor space of your room starts to expand.

Utilize the Space

You should always be on the look out for clever ways to store items without creating visual clutter. Out of season clothes can be stored in containers under the bed and a series of door hooks can provide hanging space for smaller accessories and handbags inside the closet. Decorative hat boxes that coordinate with the color scheme may be used to store other odds and ends. These can be kept in plain view because they will look beautiful while being functional.

There is no need to stumble around a cramped bedroom or to open the door to a space that gives off a claustrophobic feel at night. Reclaim your bedroom by implementing some of these clever tricks and fall in love with your room all over again.
