The master bedroom, especially in today's chaotic world, should be a place of retreat with calming colors and personal decor touches. Here's how to get the look for less.

Take a good honest look around the master bedroom. Is it a place to simply dump clothes, store dirty laundry hampers and fall asleep? Or it is a room for peace and quiet tranquility that recharges the soul and refreshes the body?

The latter is probably preferred (unless the desired look is a primeval college dorm) and with a little planning and some clever DIY interior decorating and room design, Does it look more like a dorm room than a bedroom? If so, it's time to redecorate the master bedroom. Here are some renovation ideas that will offer maximum design impact for the bedroom, but won't break the budget.

Decide on the Final Look of the Master Bedroom

First, decide what should be in the bedroom and how it should look and feel when the DIY renovation project is completed. Perhaps look through magazines to find pictures of master retreat bedrooms that are appealing, or create a room storyboard that includes furniture styles, color palettes and design ideas for drapery, flooring and room accessories. Some decorators choose to incorporate a decor theme but this often works better in a young bedroom, and doesn't always translate so well in an adult space.

Decide on the function of the room – a single purpose to sleep in or a multipurpose room that works for reading, watching TV, and with a computer nook. A room that is well designed ahead of time saves money and time.

A Little Paint Can Make a Huge Impact

The most immediate and least expensive change that can be made to a bedroom is with paint. Paint choices can be one color for a monochromatic effect, or more than one color with a feature painted wall for visual interest. Regardless of the colors chosen, blue or pink, green or yellow, new paint in a room can make a dramatic and instantaneous difference.

A Color Scheme Should Reflect the Room’s Feel

With paint on the walls, it is time to pull together a true color scheme, using the paint colors as a launching point. The color scheme in a room should reflect the desired feel of the room, whether that is restful and tranquil or energetic and fun.

Sticking with a monochromatic look means choosing carpet, furniture and accessories that are various shades of one color (think about the white used in shabby chic décor). For instance, with rich chocolate brown drapes, consider a mocha colored sofa, a sumptuous champagne silk slipcovered headboard and soft ecru beige colored area rug.

Or, go for the colorful approach, and be daring with several colors. In this design scheme, don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns as well as color palettes for a truly eclectic look and feel in the master bedroom. Contrasting colors such as yellow and purple, or red and green can be fun. Make sure one of the colors is a softer shade, for instance red with a soft green so the final look of the room is not too severe or harsh.

Accessories Add Excitement to an Interior Design Space

With the paint and color scheme chosen, and the soft furnishings and major pieces of furniture installed in the master bedroom, it is time to make it all come to life with décor and accessories.

It is absolutely true that accessories make a room design great. Think back to seeing a room that was nicely designed, sported high end furniture and was stuffed to the gills with knick knacks that spoiled the overall interior design of the room. Here are a four great accessories that will enhance the interior design in any master bedroom for very little money:

  1. Mirrors: Placed strategically on the wall to make a room brighter and larger and to check makeup, of course. Don’t forget about tabletop mirrors that can bring a touch of sparkle to an otherwise dull vanity surface.
  2. Plants: Whether live or silk, greenery will make the room feel cozier. If the room is large with lots of light, don’t be afraid to include large tropical floor plants or lush hanging ferns. Plants add oxygen to the room, and give it a lush, lovely feel.
  3. Pillows and throws: Lots of pillows for luxurious lazy mornings in bed look great all fluffed up when the bed is made. A throw on a slipper chair or on the end of the bed gives the room a warm and fuzzy feeling, and is the perfect place for curling up with a good book on a cold, winter day.
  4. Artwork: No room is ever complete without art. Don't limit wall and tabletop art décor to just paintings and photographs. Consider three-dimensional piece of unique art or sculpture to add interest.
