Ideas for a Harry Potter Themed BedroomHow to Decorate a Child's Room in Hogwarts Style
JK Rowling's Harry Potter is popular enough that a Potter-themed room may excite the envy of children and adults alike! Here are several ideas for decorating a bedroom.
A Harry Potter themed bedroom can draw its inspiration from the Harry Potter books, movies, both or a more general wizarding theme. The visual companions to the movies, available from most libraries, are a valuable source for checking the details of costumes, heraldic devices and so on. Fan art is another great source for inspiration – you won't be the first person to have attempted a Harry Potter themed room! Create a Wizard's Workroom Themed BedroomA child who is fond of art and tinkering with projects might enjoy a bedroom themed like a wizard's workroom. Hide craft supplies and clutter in a old spice chest or wunderkabinet, and scatter a few delightfully wizardy accoutrements – candle stubs, beakers and feathers – across a sturdy workbench. Laminate a sheet of aged, tea-dyed paper and hang it up as a to-do list – whiteboard markers will wipe right off. Wrapping the child's books in antique-looking papers or even plain brown paper, marked with wizardy calligraphy, gives the impression of a shelf of spell books. Use a free-standing wardrobe of dark wood instead of a built-in closet; decorate the bedside table with a vase of wooden calligraphy pens; and use test tubes full of coloured marbles or bath salts to accent the room. Harry Potter Art Project Ideas describes how to store goodies in a Potions cabinet. Recreate Harry's Hogwarts Dorm RoomA Hogwarts dorm bedroom is particularly suitable for a shared bedroom. In the movies, Harry and Ron slept in wooden four-poster beds draped with maroon hangings. Their belongings were kept in trunks at the foot of each bed; cabinets beside the beds also held belongings. The dorm rooms were round and fairly spartan, so this room may be more suitable for a tidy child – or one with a separate playroom! Create A Quidditch Themed RoomFans of Quidditch have plenty of decorating fodder. Ron's Chudley Cannons-themed bedroom was orange with posters and had a matching bedspread. Pennants for the Hogwarts House of choice are easy to make, as are broomsticks. Hogwarts-themed protective gear can be arranged in a corner with a broomstick and a few Quaffles or Bludgers. Display Quidditch trophies on a shelf, decorate the room with souvenirs such as Harry and Ron receieved at the Quidditch World Cup, and post team lists or score cards (calligraphed on tea-dyed paper) on the wall. Design A Hogwarts Castle Themed RoomPaint the walls, or just one feature wall, with a grey brick/stonework pattern to imitate castle walls. Add sconces and torchlike lights, paint the ceiling to look like the night sky and hang Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff banners on the walls. Paintings similar to those that lined the walls at Hogwarts can be hung on the walls as well; or for a fun trompe l'oeil, paint a mural that features a fake window, through which the Whomping Willow or another feature of the Hogwarts grounds can be seen.
