Ideas for Decorating a Little Girl's BedroomThings to Keep in Mind When Designing a Room for a Young Girl
Whether your little girl is traditional, rebellious, or a little bit of a tomboy, she deserves a space all her own that reflects her unique personality.
Planning a room for a little girl can be one of the most fun home décor projects a person can ever take on (as can decorating a room for a little boy). While the style should still slightly reflect the style of the rest of the home, it’s very important to make sure that a child’s room is indicative of his or her personality and reflects his or her interests. So when it comes to decorating a little girl’s room, let her have a say in how it’s done, and fill the room with items she loves. Paint and Fabric for Little Girl’s RoomsWhen it comes to painting a little girl’s bedroom, don’t be afraid to think outside the box. While there are certain colors that are traditionally associated with girl’s bedrooms (pink, purple, etc.), don’t feel that you need to stick with these. Why not let the little girl whose room it is decide? Let her personality dictate and paint the room in whatever color she prefers. The great thing about paint is that it’s inexpensive and relatively easy to change if she decides later that she no longer likes it. Have fun with fabrics as well. Curtains, bedding, area rugs, throws, and accent pillows, are great ways to add color and pattern to a little girl’s room. Wall Decorations for Girl’s BedroomsOnce the room is painted, feel free to dress up the walls. The options are limitless. While hand painted murals can be beautiful, they can also be expensive (unless you’re doing it yourself). A nice alternative is to use peel-and-stick wall decals. They can be placed anywhere on the wall and can be easily removed. There are a ton of varieties to choose from, and they can be mixed and matched. Artwork that she likes should also be hung on the wall. Whether it’s pretty paintings; photographs of family, friends, or pets; or posters of her favorite movie stars; hanging things on the wall that your little girl likes will help make the room feel like her own. Also make sure that there’s a spot for your little girl to hang up her own artwork. A large cork, or magnetic bulletin board is perfect for hanging school-made artwork, pictures, ribbons, and/or awards. Keep Children’s Rooms OrganizedWhen decorating a girl’s bedroom it’s important to keep storage and organization in mind. Include shelving; freestanding bookcases, an armoire, hanging shelves, or anything else that provides storage is a good idea. Little girls have a lot of toys, books, crafts, and other playthings that can easily become disorganized. Baskets and bins designated for specific items can be a huge help in keeping things in their place. Label bins and place them on shelves for a streamlined look. Lighting and Accessories for Little Girl’s BedroomsIt’s important to have adequate lighting in any child’s bedroom. Whether they’re doing homework at a desk, making arts and crafts in a designated area, or reading before bed, make sure there is appropriate lighting anywhere necessary. An overhead light is not enough. Table lamps, floor lamps, and sconces come in a wide variety of styles and colors, so they also make for fun decorative accessories. Make sure to include a full-length mirror when decorating a girl’s room. Little girls love to play dress-up, so make sure they have a place where they can check themselves out. Little extras like decorative knobs, ribbon detailing on lampshades and curtains, and personalized arts and crafts will help add those special touches that make your little girl’s bedroom unique. Like with any child’s room, it’s important to decorate for the future. While theme rooms can be fun, keep in mind that everything will have to be redone when the child gets older and becomes tired of it. Instead, invest in good quality pieces that will last as your little girl grows up. Big-ticket items like beds, chests, and armoires should last for years to come. But smaller, less expensive items like curtains and bedding, and accessories should reflect the child’s current passions and interests. Remember to include your child in the decorating process and have fun while doing it.
