Choose an overall theme or decorating style for a teen bedroom remodeling project . Find ways to customize the room to fit the teen's lifestyle and personality

A teen's bedroom is her haven, serving as much more than place to sleep. Teens often spend a great deal of time in their bedrooms and invite friends over as well. Give her a room that reflects her style and personality. Involving the teenager in the bedroom remodeling design plan ensures the finished look is a hit. She may even want to help work on her room's transformation.

Hobby-Themed

Hobbies are a big part of a teenager's life. Use the hobby as the inspiration for the design and decor in his bedroom. Typical hobbies for this age include skateboarding, sports, musical interests, drama, art and drawing. Ask your teenager which hobby or interest he prefers to feature in the room, particularly if he has multiple hobbies and talents.

Determine a color scheme that fits the teen's preferences and meshes well with the selected hobby theme. A hobby-themed mural or vinyl wall stickers customize the room. Objects related to the theme work well as room accents. For example, a skateboarding themed room might include skateboards mounted to the wall and a small skateboard ramp in the corner of the room. For a musically-themed room, plaster sheet music to the walls or place a music stand in the corner to hold artwork.

Colorful

Bright colors and geometric shapes combine to create an exciting, distinct room for teenagers. Stick with a few bright colors that compliment each other well to avoid overloading the room. Find a bedding set that works with the color scheme, choosing either solids or a patterned design depending you the teen's preference. Geometric patterns painted such as circles or stripes painted on the wall add interest. Abstract artwork with similar or complimentary colors offers another wall decor option.

If your teen has a favorite color, use it as the main inspiration for the decoration. Many colors lend themselves to a certain tone. For example, a turquoise blue room creates a relaxing, tropical feel reminiscent of the beach.

Modern

The modern bedroom style is all about sleek, clean lines and simplicity in the design. Choose a modern metal bed frame as a focal point of the room. Another option is a plain wood frame painted black. Muted colors such as gray and white are usually found in a modern bedroom. Splashes of color through modern pieces of art wake up the room.

Recessed lighting or floor lights pointed up at wall art add to the modern feel of the room. Adding a contemporary sofa to the bedroom gives it an urban loft theme. This emphasizes the modern tone even more and gives the teen inhabitant and her friends a place to lounge.
